Use Logic, Imagination and Creativity when you take notes
How to remember and utilize what you want to learn by taking notes
by Jim Kwik
- Hand writing notes improves comprehension and retention. Digital notes is convenient for searching and sharing but try to do hand written notes first.
- Taking full transcripts (verbatum) of chapters or lectures is one of the worst ways of taking notes.
- Split the page into right and left sections.
- Name the left section “capture” and name the right section “create”.
- The left side is for taking notes and the right side is for making notes.
- Left side of the brain is for logic.
- Right side of the brain is for imagination and creativity. On the right side, keep asking and answering questions like
- How can I use this?
- Why must I use this?
- When will I use this?
- How does this compare to what I already know?
- What questions do I have about this subject?
- Who do I want to teach this to?
- How does this relate to something else that I learned?
- How is this contradictory to something else that I learned?
