Two critical neural networks of the brain

We need to understand the two modes of neural networks.

Executive functions network

A set of cognitive processes and mental skills that help an individual plan, monitor and successfully execute their goals. This includes attentional control, working memory inhibition and problem solving.

As an interesting side note, people with ADHD often have what’s referred to as executive dysfunction which is why they struggle to control their attention. We have short-term memories and high impulsivity.

Default mode network

Ventral Striatum - less activation in this area when making decisions leads to risky behavior

Intriguingly, another study from neuroscientists at Duke University showed that children, who tend to be far less risk averse than adults, show less activation in the ventral striatum when making decisions. But as they get older, and this part of the brain develops more, their appetite for risk falls.
